How have you defined a “group”?
There is a long-standing debate spanning several scientific fields about what constitutes a “group” or
“population”. For our analysis here, we define a “group” to be a set of individuals whom all have a
similar genetic make-up. This is initially based on labels given by researchers during the sampling
process (which are dependent on self-identification) but in some cases we refined groups to better
reflect genetic similarity using the fineSTRUCTURE algorithm (see below).
